Hazard Review

Facilitation

Our engineers approach hazard management with effective risk assessment solutions.  Whether this be a high level on-the-go assessment, or a more detailed quantitative assessment.  Our engineers have facilitated over 100 hazard reviews:

Options Screening and Selection

As engineers we love to find solutions to problems, but what happens if there is more than one solution?  This is where ISE can help!

Our independent specialists can integrate into and support your team to help them find the best solution:

  • Problem Statement: For any options-screening, we first need to understand the issue.  This can be anything from; wanting to start a new production line, reducing operating costs, selecting a greener energy source, or even modifying a process that does not work.

  • Options Definition and Screening: Together we clarify and define all options to be considered for the review. We ensure that the necessary level of detail is available.

  • Options Selection: Depending on the specific circumstances, a variety of approaches to options-selection may be tailored to your needs.  Typically, screening considers; technical feasibility, capital expenditure, operational costs, safety, operability and the environment.

At ISE we tailor the options-screening and selection process to meet our client’s needs.

Hazard Identification (HAZID)

How do you know that you project or operations are safe?

Hazard Identification (HAZID) is a systematic approach to qualitatively identify all foreseeable hazards, assess the potential affects, consider the suitability of the safeguards and find any gaps or short comings to be addressed.

  • At ISE we ensure your HAZID is not a check box exercise and that the outcomes of the review are beneficial to the key stakeholders.

  • ISE can provide training courses to help you improve your in-house competency and we can also provide a suitable facilitator for your specific HAZID.

  • The HAZID process typically involves planning of the workshop in a pre-meeting with the client and the main disciplines involved in the scope.

Hazard and Operability (HAZOP)

For every process and plant designed to operate, assurances are required that equipment and control systems will manage all foreseeable operation and control issues.

For example: if an open valve is inadvertently closed, the process equipment must respond in a way that protects people, environment and the assets, in which you have invested.  The HAZOP is a structured review, which aims to identify and assess all credible deviations from design intent.

  • The important thing for a HAZOP is to confirm that the team can visualise the process (line, equipment, plant etc) at the same time as they brainstorm/identify all the credible deviations.

  • Once the credible deviations have been identified, these are systematically assessed, to make sure that the consequence is fully understood e.g. if a valve is closed, the pressure may rise with potential to exceed the design pressure.  Depending on the design pressure this could lead to flange leakage or rupture with loss of containment, and potential impact to personnel in the vicinity.

  • The team then assess the existing safety and control system design capabilities and layers of protection. To make sure that these are suitable and sufficient to manage the deviation.
